Rain and downpours with thunderstorms expected this afternoon

Diagnosis: The high temperatures recorded this morning, along with the progressive increase in humidity, are generating favorable atmospheric conditions for the formation of rain and showers with thunderstorms during the afternoon and part of the night.

Forecast: Rain and showers with thunderstorms are expected in parts of the Pacific and Central Valley during the afternoon, which may extend into the night, gradually decreasing in intensity. These conditions may also occur in the mountains and plains of the Northern Zone, as well as in the western Caribbean, although isolated in these latter regions.

Estimated rainfall amounts for periods of 6 to 12 hours:

• North, Central, and South Pacific: between 30 mm and 60 mm, with maximums of up to 90 mm.
• Central Valley: between 20 mm and 40 mm, with maximums of up to 70 mm.
• Northern Zone: between 20 mm and 50 mm, with highs of up to 75 mm.
• Western North and South Caribbean: between 10 mm and 30 mm, with localized highs of up to 70 mm.

Warning: Currently, soil saturation rates between 85% and 95% are recorded around the canton of Osa, the mountains of the South Pacific, Central Pacific, and the Nicoya Peninsula, as well as the mountains of the Northern Zone and the surrounding area of ​​Sarapiquí.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Precaution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention during thunderstorms and seeking shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
