Weather Warning

Variable rains this afternoon and evening in South and Central Pacific regions

November 18, 2023
10:25 a.m.

Diagnosis: The Intertropical Convergence Zone over Costa Rica maintains instability in maritime areas surrounding both slopes. This factor has generated cloudy conditions with weak rains and drizzles in the Central Valley, in addition, very localized downpours in the Nicoya Peninsula and Pacific coasts with amounts recorded between 1 -10 mm with maximums less than 30 mm (Nicoya Peninsula). .

Forecast: Variable cloudy conditions are expected to continue in the morning in the national territory, with rain in specific sectors of both peninsulas and surrounding coastal parts of the Pacific. The estimated amounts will be between 10 – 40 mm.

For the afternoon and evening hours, a rebound in precipitation is expected with scattered rains and downpours, mainly in sectors of the Central-South Pacific (lower parts such as coastal sectors) and around the Nicoya Peninsula. The estimated amounts in 24-hour periods will be between 25 - 50 mm with specific maximums between 70 - 90 mm.

Precipitation in the mountains of the Northern Caribbean and lower parts of the Northern Zone will be more isolated, with the presence of showers and possible occasional storms. Amounts between 15 - 35 mm with localized maximums of 50 mm. The Central Valley will tend to present scattered rains with amounts of less than 25 mm and with cloudiness and fog banks during the night.

Warning: Soil saturation persists in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, Northern Zone and mountainous Northern Caribbean.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
