Tropical Storm Ian and its indirect influence over the country

Diagnosis: This Sunday, tropical storm Ian is located about 847 km to the Northeast (NNE) of Puerto Limón and is heading towards the Gulf of Mexico at a speed of 19 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 95 km/h. Due to its position, Ian maintains an indirect influence over the national territory this Sunday night and tomorrow Monday; since the Intertropical Convergence Zone is located over Costa Rica.
At this time, the region with the highest accumulations has been the Central Valley, with accumulations between 20mm-30mm and maximum of up to 50mm in the north of Heredia. In the rest of the national territory, rain accumulations have been scattered with maximums of 90mm in Liberia and 75mm in Parrita.
Forecast: In the Pacific slope, rains are expected along the coast mainly in the Central Pacific and South Pacific during this night and early hours of Monday, with estimated amounts between 50 mm - 100 mm and punctual maximums of up to 150 mm and 170 mm in periods of 24 hours in the following 36 hours. Meanwhile, in the Central Valley, rainfall will occur in the afternoon, concentrated in the mountains both in the north of the region and in the hills south of San José and north of Cartago; with estimated amounts between 25 mm - 50 mm and maximums of 75 mm.
In the rest of the country, isolated showers with thunderstorms with accumulated amounts between 20 mm - 40 mm during Monday afternoon.
Warning: Caution in the coastal/mountainous regions of the Pacific slope and mountainous sectors of the Central Valley as well as the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, since these regions present high saturation levels due to the rainfall of the last few days.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- - Caution for sewer saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country before heavy rainfall events.
- - Prevention before thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
- - Be alert in areas prone to landslides in the mountainous sectors of the Central Valley.
