Weather Warning

Tropical Wave 3 will move over Costa Rica this Wednesday

May 27, 2025
07.00 p.m.

Discussion: Tropical Wave 3 is moving over eastern Panama. This system will continue its westward movement, entering Costa Rica on Wednesday. This, along with local factors such as morning warming and the arrival of sea breezes, will lead to showers and thunderstorms.

Forecast: Partial to complete cloud cover is expected this morning, with scattered rain in parts of the Caribbean and the North Zone, with accumulated rainfall between 15-40 mm; in the Pacific and Central Valley, partial cloud cover will remain.

For the afternoon and early evening, variable intensity rain with thunderstorms is expected in regions of the Pacific, the Central Valley, the North Zone, and mountainous areas of the Caribbean. Estimated rainfall amounts between 30-60 mm over a 6-hour period are expected, with higher localized accumulations possible.

Warning: Soil saturation levels between 85-90% are occurring in the Nicoya Peninsula, Sarapiquí Basin, South Pacific. This situation increases the risk of flash flooding in low-lying areas and small landslides in mountainous areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are detected near storm clouds, due to the potential for falling tree branches, power lines, and other conditions. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
