Meteorological Warning

Unstable atmospheric conditions persist this Thursday

May 30, 2024
9:30 am

Diagnosis: Tropical wave #4 is over the Pacific Ocean and moving away from our country. However, unstable conditions persist in the atmosphere over the national territory due to the position and activity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, as well as a very high humidity content. During this morning, heavy rainfall occurred in sectors south of the Nicoya peninsula (Paquera 100 mm), while in the early hours of the morning there were scattered weak rains in the Caribbean and part of the Northern Zone (less than 5 mm). ).

Forecast: Throughout this afternoon and part of the night, mostly cloudy skies with variable rain activity will be occurring over the country.

Moderate to heavy rains with localized showers and storms are expected for the Central Valley. The greatest probability of intense convective activity is expected for the mountainous sectors to the north and west of the region. Estimated amounts between 10-50 mm with the possibility of occasional higher amounts.

In the Pacific regions, downpours with storms are expected, mainly in mountainous areas in the early afternoon and later moving towards coastal areas (especially in the Central Pacific and Nicoya Peninsula) at the beginning of the night. Maximum amounts estimated between 60-80 mm with possible localized higher amounts.

For the Caribbean and Northern Zone, a similar panorama is expected with rainy activity in mountainous areas in the afternoon, while at night a reinforcement of rains is anticipated in the coastal parts in the case of the Caribbean and in the plains and border area. for the North Zone. Maximum amounts between 20-60 mm.

Warning: The rains of the last few days maintain particularly high levels of saturation in the soils for the mountainous areas and their surroundings in the Caribbean and Northern Zone (Sarapiquí, Pococí, Sacred Mountain, among others), as well as in the border area with Panama (Coto Brus) so they are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding. Special attention also to urban areas of the Central Valley, areas south of the Nicoya Peninsula and coastal areas of the Central Pacific due to the possibility of incidents due to sewage saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
