Weather Warning
Variable rains in the country this Saturday and tropical wave #4 tomorrow Sunday
May 24, 2025
11.40 am
Forecast: This weekend, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITC) is active again off the Costa Rican Pacific, causing downpours in the South Pacific and intermittent rain events in the Central Pacific early this morning and into the morning. Tropical Wave 4 is located east of Panama and is expected to cross our country tomorrow.
Forecast: For Saturday afternoon and evening, variable rainfall is expected on the Pacific side, especially in the Central and South Pacific, as well as the Nicoya Peninsula. Rainfall amounts between 25 and 60 mm are expected over a period of 3 to 6 hours. Isolated showers with occasional thunderstorms are expected in the northern zone, the Central Valley, and central Guanacaste, with rainfall amounts between 10 and 45 mm over the same periods.
Tropical Wave 4 will modulate weather conditions in our country this Sunday, increasing humidity and instability as it passes. The regions most likely to see increased rainfall are the Central Pacific, South Pacific, and the Northern Zone, especially in the late afternoon and evening of this Sunday.
Warning: Saturated soils are found in the plains of the Nicoya Peninsula, the Northern Caribbean, Braulio Carrillo National Park, and the Sarapiquí Basin. High saturation levels are also being recorded in the basins of the South Pacific.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding. • Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social media: Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR, and the website: www.imn.ac.cr
