Informative Weather Warning

Extreme heat conditions in the country this week

March 7th, 2024
3.30 p.m.

Diagnosis: Given the usually hot conditions of March in our country, together with the absence of clouds and trade winds, which have also been reinforced by the presence of the El Niño phenomenon, extreme maximum temperatures have been recorded in Guanacaste and Central Valley, breaking some records for the month of March.

Forecast: In view of this situation, the latest analyses indicate that these extreme heat conditions will continue for the rest of the week in the national territory.

For the North Pacific we will continue with maximum temperatures close to 40°C during the day; occasionally higher values could be registered. While in the Central Valley maximum temperatures close to 33°C will remain, especially in the west of the region. In the rest of the country, maximum temperatures between 33°C and 36°C are expected.

As of Monday, we will have a decrease in extreme heat due to the increase in the trade winds.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Keep hydrated regularly to avoid heat stroke.
  •     Use sunscreen at all times, avoiding exposure to solar radiation between 10 am and 2pm.
  •     Stay informed through the social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto
  •     Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
