Weather Warning

Tropical wave #14 over Costa Rica this Friday

July 11th, 2025
9:50 a.m.

Diagnosis: The high humidity level across the country and the current instability are a result of Tropical Wave 14, which is positioned over the country this morning. Scattered showers have occurred since early this morning (along the northern border), and this morning (northern coastal Caribbean to surrounding lowland areas in the west), with accumulated rainfall over the last 12 hours ranging from 0.5 to 1.2 inches (5 to 30 mm).

Forecast: During the morning and into the afternoon, cloudiness is expected to enter the country from the Caribbean Sea, favoring rain and downpours of varying intensity (locally heavy) in regions of the Caribbean and the Northern Zone. Accumulated rainfall over 6-12 hours is expected to range from 0.79 to 1.57 inches (20 to 40 mm), with maximums between 2.40 and 3.5 inches (60 to 90 mm). To a lesser extent, the cloud cover will gradually extend to other parts of the country, such as the Central Valley and the mountainous areas, which may cause scattered rain with accumulated amounts of less than 45 mm. In the afternoon, cloudy development and thunderstorms are expected in the Central Pacific, South Pacific, and the Northern Zone. Scattered showers and rain are not ruled out in the Central Valley, the Nicoya Peninsula, and the Caribbean mountains. Towards the evening, scattered rain is expected in coastal areas on both sides of the Atlantic and also in the Northern Zone. Accumulations between 30 mm and 80 mm are expected over 12-hour periods; higher amounts are possible locally.

Warning: Caution for thunderstorm events that may be accompanied by downbursts. Saturated soils are present in the mountains of the southern part of the Northern Zone and in the Central and South Pacific.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution against possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.

• Prevention in the event of a thunderstorm: If strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
