Weather Report N°4

Tropical Storm Pilar with indirect influence on the country

October 30, 2023
10:30 p.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical Storm Pilar is positioned in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of El Salvador, approximately 665 km west of the Gulf of Papagayo, Costa Rica. According to the National Hurricane Center, the storm has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and a travel speed of 9 km/h. In addition, the trajectory perspective is maintained in an east-northeast direction, towards El Salvador and the northern border of Nicaragua. Over Costa Rica, the interaction of this cyclone with the Intertropical Convergence Zone maintains unstable conditions, favoring weak rains during the early morning and localized downpours during the morning over the Peninsula and Gulf of Nicoya. Amounts recorded in the last 12 hours are between 15 - 30 mm.

Forecast: The prospect of indirect influence of Tropical Storm Pilar on Costa Rica remains, with a tendency to increase starting tonight and towards Tuesday.

Specifically for this Monday, partly to mostly cloudy skies are expected with variable rains throughout the day. In the North Pacific regions there will be intermittent rain including heavy downpours with occasional thunderstorms during the morning and late afternoon-night hours. In the rest of the Pacific, possible rains in the mountainous areas, during the night and early morning towards the coasts. In the Central Valley rains and downpours to the north, eastern and southern sectors. Isolated showers are expected in the mountainous areas of the Caribbean and the North, being scattered accompanied by a thunderstorm in the lower parts of the North and South Caribbean with a thunderstorm.

Estimated amounts for the Pacific between 50 - 80 mm with localized maximums of 140 mm, for the Central Valley between 20 - 60 mm, mountains of the Caribbean and Northern Zone between 10 - 50 mm and coastal areas of the Caribbean between 10 - 40 mm with maximums punctual up to 70 mm. This for periods of 24 hours.

Regarding wind, the occurrence of occasional gusts between 20 - 40 km/h is forecast for the North Pacific, with maximums of up to 70 km/h in localized points in the mountainous parts of the country.

Warning: Special attention in the Pacific regions and mountainous areas, in addition to the Nicoya Peninsula, because they are the areas where the heaviest rains are expected and where there are soils saturated by the rains in recent days.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
