Weather Report N°8
The indirect effects of tropical storm Pilar continue in the country
October 31, 2023.
10.30 a.m.
Discussion: Tropical Storm Pilar is located in the Pacific Ocean off the coasts of El Salvador and Nicaragua, approximately 481 km northwest (NW) of the Gulf of Papagayo. The National Hurricane Center indicates that this tropical cyclone has sustained winds of 85 km/h and is moving towards El Salvador at 6 km/h. On the forecast trajectory, Pilar could approach the coasts of El Salvador and Nicaragua on the night of this day; and then on Wednesday, it begins to move away into the open sea.
The interaction of this cyclone with the Intertropical Convergence Zone generates extremely unstable and humid conditions in our country. Due to the above, cloud cover has predominated in most of the national territory, the rains remain constant, intermittent drizzle and banks of fog, with amounts between 15-35 mm in the North and South Pacific, in the last 6 hours, in the rest of the country rains less than 10 mm.
Forecast: The country will continue to be under the indirect effects of Tropical Storm Pilar and will continue until Wednesday. This influence will gradually decrease later that day, as this system moves away from the region.
Rains are expected intermittently in the country. The highest accumulations are seen towards the regions of the North Pacific and occasionally in the Central and South Pacific, amounts between 50 - 80 mm are estimated with localized maximums of 100 mm in periods of 12-24 hours.
In the Central Valley, the rains would be between weak and moderate intensity with accumulations between 20-50 mm, mainly in the late afternoon and during the night, and fog banks are also expected.
For its part, isolated downpours with thunderstorms and amounts between 20 mm and 40 mm with occasional maximums of up to 70 mm are forecast in the Northern Zone and the Caribbean.
There is a possibility of occasional gusts of wind in the North Pacific with an estimated range between 20 km/h and 40 km/h and maximums of up to 70 km/h. While, in the mountainous parts of the country they would reach 60 km/h.
Warning: Special attention in the regions of the North Pacific, Central Pacific and the mountainous areas of the Central Valley and North Zone; because they are the areas where the heaviest rains are expected and where there are soils saturated by the rains in recent days.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewage saturation and possible flash floods, as well as the main routes of the country in the event of heavy rain events.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
