Weather Warning

Unstable atmospheric pattern this morning

June 16, 2025
12:30 a.m.

Diagnosis: Atmospheric instability, associated with both the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and the presence of a low-pressure system in the Pacific Ocean, located off the coast of Guanacaste and Nicaragua, has favored rainy conditions throughout the country tonight. Rainfall of varying intensity has been recorded, with localized downpours and thunderstorms.
Over the last six hours, accumulated precipitation has been as follows:

  • Northern Zone: between 20 and 55 mm, with a maximum of 109 mm at the Northern Zone airfield.
  • Northern Pacific: between 5 and 10 mm, with a maximum of 17 mm in Palo Verde, Guanacaste.
  • Central Pacific: between 15 and 30 mm, with a maximum of 41 mm in Río Nuevo de Pérez Zeledón.
  • Southern Pacific: between 10 and 25 mm, with a maximum of 43 mm in San Vito, Puntarenas.
  • Central Valley: Between 20 and 45 mm, with a maximum of 70 mm at the CIGEFI (Central Watershed).
  • Northern Caribbean: Between 15 and 40 mm, with a maximum of 53 mm at the Horquetas Hydroelectric Plant.
  • Southern Caribbean: Between 10 and 30 mm, with a maximum of 49 mm at La Suiza de Turrialba.

Forecast: Light to moderate rains could occur during the early morning hours of Monday, with localized downpours on the Nicoya Peninsula, coastal areas of the Central and South Pacific, border areas of the Northern Zone, and the Caribbean mountains, with accumulated rainfall between 20 and 50 mm over 3- to 6-hour periods. Light rains are expected in the Central Valley, with estimated accumulations between 5 and 15 mm over 6-hour periods.

Tropical Wave 6, currently centered at 82° W, is expected to enter Panama this Monday. This system will increase rainfall throughout the beginning of the week.

Warning: Special attention should be paid to the Nicoya Peninsula, the mountains of the Northern Zone, the Sarapiquí Basin, and the South Pacific, as these areas have very high soil saturation levels, between 85% and 95%, which increases the vulnerability to incidents.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Be cautious about sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
