Informe meteorologico N°6

Depresión tropical #14 provoca lluvias fuertes esta noche

21 de agosto de 2020
6 p.m.

Diagnosis: Tropical depression # 14 is located 415 km SE of Cozumel in Mexico, it is moving at 20 km / h to the northwest (NW), it is expected to reach the category of a tropical storm tonight. This system continues to cause the Intertropical Convergence Zone to position itself in the north of our country, inducing a constant flow of humidity from the Pacific Ocean.

Given this, heavy rains and downpours have been generated in the course of the afternoon in the North Pacific and North Zone, below are the amounts by climatic region:

Forecast: For this Friday night and Saturday morning, the rainy activity will continue strong on the Pacific slope (especially the sector between Puntarenas and Quepos) as well as in the North Zone, the accumulated are estimated between 40-125 mm in periods 3 to 6 hours. For the Central Valley, intermittent rains and fog are expected in this night period, accumulated 45 mm, towards the extreme west of this region there could be heavy downpours with accumulated 70 mm. Scattered showers are anticipated in the mountains of the Caribbean, the maximum amounts are estimated between 5-25 mm.

The analyzes show the persistence of the indirect impact by tropical depression # 14 on the country for this Saturday inclusive and that heavy rains will continue in the Pacific and North Zone.

Warning: Special attention in the North and Central Pacific, the North Zone and the west of the Central Valley, since the soils remain saturated due to the rains of the last days and maintain a high probability of heavy downpours tonight.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation.
• Caution on the main national highways due to reduced visibility, special attention to Route 27 tonight due to heavy downpours.
• Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
• Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr

The next report will be issue at midnight.
