Weather Warning -Update-

Thunderstorms and showers by the Intertropical Convergence Zone

Diagnosis: A high humidity content, together with the position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, has generated unstable conditions over the national territory, favoring the presence of downpours and variable rains with the presence of electrical storms. Those accumulated so far are between 30 - 60 mm for the Central Valley, between 15 - 50 mm with specific maximums of up to 80 mm in the Central Pacific and South Pacific, and locally in sectors surrounding Sarapiqui and the Braulio National Park. Carrillo in the Northern Caribbean, the accumulated has reached up to 95 mm.

Forecast: For the remainder of the afternoon, downpours with storms will continue in the lower parts of the North Pacific, the Nicoya Peninsula, around the Golfo Dulce and coastal areas of the Central Pacific. The estimated amounts in 6 hours will be between 20 - 40 mm with specific maximums of up to 60 mm.

The Caribbean regions and the Northern Zone will increase the probability of downpours with occasional and localized storms, these towards the end of the afternoon and during the night period. The estimated amounts will be between 15 - 40 mm with specific maximums of 80 mm in periods of 12 hours.

The mountainous parts of the Central Pacific, South Pacific and the entire Central Valley will maintain moderate to weak rains, but decreasing towards the first hours of the night. The estimated amounts will be between 10 – 40 mm in periods of 6 hours.

Warning: Special attention to mountainous sectors of the North and South Pacific Zone due to saturated soil conditions, which increases the probability of landslides, as well as to mountainous sectors of the west and north, both the Central Valley and the Northern Caribbean.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 to 100km/h in some isolated cases.
