Weather Warning

Rainy activity this Tuesday in the country

May 21, 2024
9.20 am

Diagnosis: Tropical wave #3 at this time is located between the Pacific Ocean and Guanacaste, moving westward, leaving extensive instability in the Intertropical Convergence Zone, which in turn remains very active between Costa Rica and Panama.

Forecast: This morning there will be rains of varying intensity in the Caribbean and Northern Zone, as well as in the Central Volcanic Mountains and east/north of the GAM. The estimated accumulations for these regions will be between 5 – 30 mm with local maximums of 40 mm.

This afternoon, the presence of heavy rains/downpours with storms is forecast over the Central and South Pacific, Central Valley, North Pacific, mountainous sectors of the Northern Zone and surrounding areas. The accumulated amounts for these regions will be between 40 - 70 mm with maximums between 70 - 100 mm; larger amounts are not ruled out from time to time.

At night we expect strong rainy activity to still remain on the coasts and adjacent maritime sector of the Pacific, from the south of Nicoya to Osa. The estimated accumulations for these regions will be between 10 – 40 mm with local maximums of 50 mm.

Warning: Attention in the Talamanca sector, General Valley, South Pacific border and the mountains of the Northern Caribbean, Northern Zone in the Sarapiquí sector, central sector of the Nicoya peninsula and Central Valley in general, this due to humid soils. Be attentive to the development of storm clouds which present their own and significant characteristics such as descending gusts, high precipitation intensity in short periods of time and electrical discharges.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends: • Caution due to sewage saturation in places prone to this type of flooding. • Prevention against electrical storms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases. • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: National Meteorological Institute CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
