Weather Warning
Very windy conditions will persist tonight from cold surge
January 05, 2020
06.05 p.m.
Discussion: The influence of cold surge # 14 is maintained; Its main effect on the country is the intense winds recorded throughout this Sunday, with gusts exceeding 100 km / h in the north of Guanacaste, while in the rest of the North Pacific and Central Valley the maximum is around 60- 80 km/h.
Forecast: The windy pattern will remain intense during the night of this day and during the early hours of Monday, maximum gusts are expected between 80-100 km/h in Central Valley, North Pacific and the mountain ranges. Gusts of strong winds will also be perceived in the mountains of the Central and South Pacific.
Intermittent rain is expected in the Caribbean and North Zone, during the night of this Sunday and early Monday with amounts between 20-40 mm. Drizzles are possible in the north and east of the Central Valley, as well as in the north of Guanacaste, accumulated less than 5 mm.
It is estimated that these weather conditions associated with cold surge begin to gradually decrease over the course of this Monday; however, windy conditions will remain strong for most of this week.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
- Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
- Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
