Cold surge # 14 causes strong winds in the country

January 05, 2020
09.40 a.m.

Discussion: On this day the influence of cold surge # 14 is maintained; Its main effect on the country is the intense winds recorded in the last hours. The most significant gusts have reached speeds of up to 106 km/h in La Cruz de Guanacaste, Liberia and Santa Cruz 70 km/h, Ciudad Colón 78 km/h, Cerro Chitaría 87 km/h, Heredia 70 km/h, Alajuela 79 km/h In addition, intermittent rains manifested during the early morning in the Caribbean and North Zone with amounts between 5-15 mm.

Forecast: The windy pattern will continue intense throughout this Sunday, maximum gusts are expected between 80-100 km/h in Central Valley, North Pacific and the mountain ranges. Gusts of strong winds will also be perceived in the mountains of the Central and South Pacific.

As for the rains, in the remainder of the morning and during the afternoon isolated rains are expected in the mountainous sectors of the Caribbean and the North Zone, accumulated between 10-20 mm. At night in these regions rains can be generalized and maintained intermittently with amounts between 20-40 mm. They are possible and drizzle in the north and east of the Central Valley, as well as in the north of Guanacaste, accumulated less than 5 mm.

It is estimated that these weather conditions associated with the cold surge would be maintained at least on Monday, reducing their impact on Tuesday.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, and in areas prone to landslides.
  • Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  • Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
