Weather Warning
Strong winds continue this Thursday
February 15, 2024
10:00 a.m.
Diagnosis: The presence of a high pressure system in the west of the Atlantic Ocean generates high atmospheric pressure in the Caribbean Sea, keeping trade winds accelerated for the country during this Thursday, registering gusts between 40 km/h and 60 km/h in the Central Valley; and between 60 km/h and 80 km/h in the North Pacific, approaching 100 km/h in La Cruz de Guanacaste.
Forecast: The windy pattern and strong to very strong gusts will continue during this Thursday and part of Friday, with the highest intensities in the center and north of the country. Strong gusts (40-60 km/h) are expected for the Central Valley and low sectors of Guanacaste, as well as very strong gusts (70-90 km/h) for the north of Guanacaste and mountains. These conditions are expected to remain until early Friday morning. During the period from Friday to Saturday, a gradual reduction of the wind is expected.
Due to the wind, the entrance of clouds from the maritime sector to the regions of both the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, will leave occasional rains, mainly near the mountains. The amounts should not exceed 15 mm in 12-hour periods. In the Central Valley, drizzle will occur in the mountains to the north of the region.
Warning: Special attention for very strong wind gusts in the North Pacific and Central Valley.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Prevention due to wind gusts and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
- Caution in air navigation due to the increase of turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to the increase of rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
- Avoid fires of any kind, as they may get out of control.
