Weather Warning

Showers this afternoon in the Central Valley and the Pacific Slope

January 28, 2020
10.00 a.m.

Diagnosis: This Tuesday the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) will be very close to the country, generating atmospheric instability and providing humidity from the Costa Rican Pacific to the national territory. These conditions are due to the weakening of the Trade Winds in the Caribbean Sea, allowing ITCZ ??to migrate to Central America.

Forecast: For this afternoon, isolated rains are forecast with the possibility of a thunderstorm in the Central Valley, mainly in the GAM: part of these rains in the region could reach the mountainous sectors of the North Zone and the Caribbean. Amounts between 5-10mm and maximums of 15-30mm are estimated in a timely manner.

For its part, isolated downpours are planned along the Pacific coast from the Nicoya Peninsula to the South Pacific from mid-afternoon until late at night; with estimated amounts between 20-30mm and maximums of 40-50mm near the coast.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, and in areas prone to landslides.
• Shelter in a safe place in case of hearing thunderstorms or perceiving strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, as well as precaution for possible fall of tree branches, power lines among others.
• Caution to drivers due to reduced visibility and wet roads.
