Weather Warning
Tropical wave #40 will favor atmospheric instability for this Monday
September 24, 2023
11:00 a.m.

Diagnosis: Costa Rica shows a stable atmospheric pattern and variable cloudiness. For the Central Pacific and South Pacific, cloudy skies are observed, the rest of the country shows partially cloudy conditions. Currently tropical wave #40 is located approximately 78°W (border between Panama and Colombia), this system shows a high humidity content and atmospheric instability.

Forecast: Throughout the afternoon, partly cloudy skies are expected for the Caribbean, North Zone and North Pacific. During the afternoon, possible isolated rains are expected in mountainous sectors with estimated amounts between 10 - 25 mm and possible localized maximums.

For the Central and South Pacific, scattered rains with localized downpours are expected, especially in mountainous sectors and near the border with Panama. These precipitations could continue until early evening. Estimated quantities in 6 hours will range between 10 - 35 mm with maximum possible quantities between 40 - 80 mm.

During the afternoon, the Central Valley presents a probability of isolated short-duration showers to the west of the region. Estimated rainfall in 6-hour periods will be between 10 – 30 mm with possible maximums in mountainous sectors.

Tropical wave #40 will strengthen the humidity content and atmospheric instability for the afternoon of Monday, September 25. The Intertropical Convergence Zone is expected to strengthen on Tuesday due to the instability pattern generated by tropical wave #40.

Warning: Caution is recommended on unstable slopes, sectors with high vulnerability to landslides due to rainfall of varying intensity in the South Pacific due to the high saturation of soils in mountainous sectors.
Therefore, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to wastewater saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against thunderstorms and seeking shelter in a safe place in case strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach between 80 and 100 kilometers per hour in some isolated cases.
