Weather Warning

Influence of cold thrust #4 transiting the Caribbean Sea Antilles

December 8, 2024
10:30 a.m.

Forecast: Cold Thrust #4 continues this Sunday over the Greater Antilles of the Caribbean Sea heading towards the Atlantic, causing its associated shear line to be positioned in Honduras.
The high pressure system that accompanies this thrust increases the intensity of the trade winds in the Caribbean and therefore, wind gusts over Costa Rica. Up to this hour, 40 km / h and 60 km / h in both the Central Valley and the North Pacific, with maximums above 80 km / h in the Cordillera de Guanacaste and the Irazu Volcano.

Regarding rains, since early morning, punctual rains have been registered both in the Northern Zone and in the Caribbean, not exceeding 15 mm; in addition to drizzles and weak rains in the mountain passes of the mountain ranges.

Forecast: During this Sunday, there will be a windy pattern in the center and north of the national territory, with intensities between 50 km/h and 70km/h, and maximums of up to 90km/h.

Both in the Northern Zone and in the Caribbean regions, rains will be weak and occasional in the mountainous sectors; on the other hand, in the plains the cloudiness will be varying between total and partial in the next hours. For the rest of the country, no significant rains are expected.

The influence of cold push #4 will maintain the windy pattern over Costa Rica at least until next Monday.

Warning: Special attention in the Northern Zone because this region maintains saturation levels between 90-100%, so its vulnerability to incidents continues to be high. Special attention should also be paid to the mountainous sectors of the Caribbean due to soil saturation levels between 80-90%.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • - Caution for sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding, as well as for increased flow in rivers and streams.
  • - Prevention due to wind gusts and possible damage to roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees, as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
  • - Caution in air navigation due to the increase of turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to the increase of rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and north of the Central Pacific.
  • - Avoid fires of any kind, as they may get out of control.
