High pressure system affecting Central America

Diagnosis: A high pressure system located in the vicinity of Florida, maintains high levels of atmospheric pressure on the Central American region which generates windy conditions on the country. So far this Tuesday there have been gusts between 40-55 km / h in the Central Valley and lower parts of Guanacaste and between 60-80 km / h in the mountainous areas. In addition, during this morning and tomorrow there were some drizzles in the North Zone and North Caribbean with amounts less than 5 mm.

 

Forecast: Throughout this day the windy conditions will continue with gusts in Guanacaste, Central Valley and mountain ranges of the country. For the central valley and the Guanacaste area, maximum gusts are anticipated between 40-60 km / h. In the mountainous parts the gusts are forecast between 60-85 km / h

As for rainfall, occasional drizzles are possible in this afternoon in the mountainous parts of the country with amounts between 1-5 mm, while during this night and early morning, isolated rains are expected in the North Zone and North Caribbean with estimated amounts between 20-60 mm. Possible higher amounts can be given locally.

The high pressure system is projected to move through the Atlantic Ocean in the coming days, maintaining its influence on the region for the remainder of this week. Due to this, the windy pattern will remain at least until next Sunday, being the most affected days this Wednesday and Thursday with gusts that can reach between 60-80 km / h in the Central Valley and Guanacaste and between 90- 110 km / h in the mountainous parts of the country.

  • Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
  •     Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation, increased flow in rivers and streams, and in areas prone to landslides.
  •     Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
  •     Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
