Weather Warning

Windy conditions this Friday and weekend

Discussion: The gradual increase in atmospheric pressure over the Caribbean Basin has caused the increase in trade winds in Costa Rica. The Central Valley, the North Pacific and the mountain ranges are the regions where constant gusts are being experienced, with maximum speeds so far in some of the IMN stations: 84 km/h in Carrillo, Orosi Volcano 82 km/h, Bagaces 73 km/h, 65 km/h in Juan Santamaría Airport, 60 km/h in Barva de Heredia, 54 km/h in Santa Ana, 94 km/h in Chirripó.

Forecast: For this day and during the weekend, trade winds are expected with moderate to strong intensities, estimated ranges close to 100 km/h in the north of Guanacaste and the mountain ranges, while in the Central Valley and the lower parts of the Pacific North estimated between 40-65 km/h.

In addition, a mass of dry air is positioned over the region, favoring mostly stable conditions and little precipitation in the country. The possibility of rain will be limited to the South Pacific in the afternoon, which will be short-term rains.

Warning: Special attention due to strong gusts in the Central Valley and the North Pacific.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.
  • Avoid burning of all types, as they can get out of control.

Weather Warning

High pressure system favors strong trade winds in the country

January 17, 2020
10:00 am

Diagnosis: a high pressure system has favored an increase in trade winds in the national territory. The most intense gusts are perceived today are located in Guanacaste with maximums of 100 km / h and 85 km / h in the mountainous sectors of the country.

Forecast: during the morning and afternoon conditions of moderate to strong winds will be maintained with maximums of up to 110 km/h in Guanacaste, on the other hand, moderate winds with maximum gusts of 80 km/h will be presented in the Central Valley and mountains of the central mountain range. Intermittent rains are expected in the Caribbean and North Zone, particularly in the highlands, with accumulated between 5-40 mm this Friday. In the rest of the country rainfall is not expected during this day.

At night, an increase in trade winds is expected, which will be increasing gradually throughout the country, reaching gusts of up to 120 km / h.
It is expected that during the weekend the affectation of said system will be maintained, generating strong trade winds, cloudy and rainy conditions in the Caribbean and North Zone.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Extreme precautions due to strong winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
Caution for boats by choppy sea and very strong waves in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, Central Pacific and the Caribbean Sea, as well as air navigation due to turbulence over the mountainous sectors.
Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
