Weather Warning Update

Rainy conditions on this Monday

October 26, 2020
03.40 p.m.

Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains over Central America generating a significant contribution of humidity and instability over Costa Rica, this situation is generating heavy downpours and storms this afternoon in the North Zone, northern Guanacaste and in an isolated way towards the South Pacific; In the last two hours, accumulations of up to 70 mm have been registered in La Cruz de Guanacaste.

Forecast: In the remainder of the afternoon, heavy downpours will continue in the North Zone, North Pacific, they are estimated to accumulate between 30-70 mm and possibly higher amounts locally. In the Central and South Pacific there will be isolated rains and downpours, with amounts between 25-50 mm. On the other hand, in the Central Valley and the mountains of the Caribbean, scattered rains are expected, accumulating between 10-40 mm.

During the night rains are expected especially in the Pacific coastal areas, accumulated between 25-50 mm; weak rains are possible in the Central Valley and mountainous sectors.

Tropical wave # 48 continues to advance over Panama, its arrival in the national territory is estimated during Tuesday, which may lead to the reinforcement of the rains during that day.

Warning: A high percentage of soil saturation prevails in the Pacific, North Zone and Central Valley due to the rains of the last days, special attention is recommended.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation and river flooding.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
