Meteorological warning

Strong wind due to high pressure system

february 8, 2019
8:45 am

Diagnosis: A high pressure system positioned in the South of the United States is generating an increase in atmospheric pressure over the Caribbean Sea and consequently an acceleration of the wind in the region. The maximum gusts recorded today were 82.3 km / h in the Orosi Volcano, 80.3 km / h in La Cruz, 60.2 km / h in Alajuela, 54.3 km / h in Santa Rosa, 51 km / h in San Joaquín, 55 km (h in Pavas, 46.5 km / h in San José and 43.5 km / h in Liberia.

Forecast: During this weekend a large high pressure system will be traveling through the southern United States and the western North Atlantic, which will cause a significant increase in atmospheric pressure on the Caribbean Sea and with this, a windy pattern of moderate intensity over the country, with strong gusts in some areas of the national territory.

Strong wind gusts are expected in Guanacaste oscillating between 80-100 km / h in the mountain ranges and between 50-80 km / h in the plain. For the mountainous sectors of the Central Valley and the rest of the country, occasional bursts are expected between 50-70 km / h. This behavior will continue at least until Monday, with Saturday being the day of greatest impact.

According to the Center for Research in Marine Sciences and Limnology of the University of Costa Rica, due to the action of the wind during the weekend there will be choppy seas and high waves on the North Pacific coast - including the Gulf of Nicoya- ; while, in the Caribbean, an increase in swell is expected these days. As for the rains, scattered showers of short duration and occasional drizzles are possible both in the North Zone and the Caribbean, as well as the Guanacaste mountain range. No significant rainfall is expected for the rest of the country

Regarding temperatures, a slight decrease in temperatures (1-2 ° C) is expected during this weekend, mainly on Saturday in the regions affected by the increase in wind.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Extreme precautions for intense winds and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  •     Also, it is important to take precautions for boats by sharp seas and strong waves in the North Pacific -including the Gulf of Nicoya and its surroundings- and the Caribbean, as well as air navigation due to turbulence in the mountainous sectors.
  •     Avoid burning of all kinds as they can get out of control.
