Weather Warning

Rainy conditions in the Caribbean and Northern Zone this morning

February 1, 2025
03:45 a.m.

Diagnosis: Strong trade winds, combined with a pulse of humidity coming from the Caribbean Sea, have favored rains during Friday night and early Saturday morning in the Caribbean and the Northern Zone. In the last 6 hours, there have been accumulated amounts of 29 mm in Pococí, 25 mm in Cahuita, 21 mm in La Fortuna, 20 mm in Montaña Sagrada (Aguas Zarcas) and 18 mm in La Virgen de Sarapiquí.

Regarding the wind, maximum gusts of 87 km/h have been recorded in La Cruz, Guanacaste and 65 km/h in Cerro Buenavista.

Forecast: Localized rain and showers are expected during the rest of the early morning and part of the morning, both in the Caribbean regions and in the Northern Zone, with estimated amounts between 20 mm and 60 mm in 6-hour periods. Part of the rainy activity could reach areas to the north and east of the Central Valley, generating light rain and drizzle.

Warning: Special attention should be paid to mountains due to the presence of strong gusts. Moderate levels of soil saturation remain in the mountains of the Northern Zone and the Caribbean, a situation that generates high vulnerability to flood risk.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Prevention due to wind gusts and their possible affectation of roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.
  • Avoid fires of all kinds, as they can get out of control.
  • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding, as well as increased flow in rivers and streams.
  • Stay informed through social networks: Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the website web www.imn.ac.cr
