Weather Warning
Windy conditions this Wednesday
December 06, 2023
11.15 a.m.
Discussion: The entry of cold thrust #6 to the north of Central America and the Caribbean Sea is generating an increase in atmospheric pressure in the region and in turn an increase in the wind pattern in the country. This morning maximum gusts were recorded in La Cruz de Guanacaste of 91 km/h, Bagaces 80 km/h, Volcán Orosi 79 km/h, Cerro Chitaría 62 km/h, Alajuela 51 km/h, Pavas 54 km/h, Cerro Buenavista 68 km/h, Chirripó 71 km/h, among others. In addition, as a result of the drag of the wind, there is an incursion of humidity from the Caribbean, favoring cloudiness and rain in the Northern Zone and the province of Limón, amounts between 5-20 mm in the last 6 hours.
Forecast: Windy conditions will prevail, with moderate to strong intensities in the north, center of the national territory, as well as in mountainous sectors. For the Central Valley, maximum gusts with speeds between 40 - 65 km/h are estimated, while, in the North Pacific and mountainous sectors, maximum speeds will range between 65 - 95 km/h.
Regarding precipitation, intermittent rains are expected in the Caribbean and Northern Zone regions. Accumulated estimates between 25-60 mm with possible higher amounts on a specific basis. Drizzles are possible in mountainous sectors of the North and East of the Central Valley, as well as in the mountain ranges adjacent to the Pacific regions, amounts less than 10 mm.
Warning: Special attention due to strong wind gusts in the mountainous sectors and north of the North Pacific.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).
- Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.
- Avoid burning of all types, as they can get out of control.
