Aviso Meteorológico

Rainy conditions extending into Sunday night

June 8, 2025
5:00 pm

Diagnosis: The high level of instability present in different atmospheric layers over the region, coupled with high humidity, has favored rainy conditions this afternoon over much of the country.

The maximum accumulated rainfall recorded as of 4:30 p.m. are:

North, Central, and South Pacific: between 20 mm and 50 mm, with a maximum of 88 mm in San Mateo and 54 mm in Río Nuevo (PZ).
Central Valley: between 5 mm and 15 mm for the most part, with specific maximums of 51 mm in Fraijanes and 37 mm in Ochomogo.
Northern Zone: between 5 mm and 15 mm, with a maximum of 40 mm in San Carlos.
Caribbean Regions: between 5 mm and 15 mm, with maximums of 66 mm in Horquetas, 87 mm in Braulio Carrillo, and 37 mm in Juan Viñas.

Flooding incidents are reported in Santa Rosa (Turrialba), Siquirres, Puriscal, and Pérez Zeledón, as well as a mudslide in the Guácimo sector.

Forecast: Strong convective cores are observed in the northwestern Central Valley, the Nicoya Peninsula, the mountains of the Central and South Pacific, and along the border with Panama. Due to this, these areas are projected to continue experiencing heavy downpours and severe thunderstorms for approximately 1-3 more hours.

Cloud cover is expected to continue moving westward, generating variable rainfall for coastal areas of the Central and South Pacific during the night. Estimated rainfall amounts are between 20-60 mm.

Meanwhile, isolated thunderstorms are expected in the Caribbean for the coastal area and lowland areas during the same period (1-3 hours), while scattered showers are expected in the mountainous areas. Estimated rainfall amounts are between 10-45 mm. The northern zone will remain mostly cloudy with isolated showers (10-35 mm).

For the second part of the night, rainfall will remain mostly light to moderate and gradually decrease. However, the formation of new convective cumulus clouds in maritime areas and their subsequent movement toward the country may reactivate isolated heavy rains in coastal areas.

Warning: Currently, soil saturation percentages between 85% and 95% are recorded around the canton of Osa, the mountains of the South Pacific, Central Pacific, and the Nicoya Peninsula, as well as mountains in the northern zone and around Sarapiquí and Braulio Carrillo, increasing vulnerability to incidents.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.

Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are detected near storm clouds, due to the potential for falling tree branches, power lines, and other conditions. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
