Weather Warning

Rainy activity this Saturday

May 10, 2025
9:05 a.m.

Diagnosis: This Saturday, the Intertropical Convergence Zone remains over the national territory. In addition, high atmospheric pressure levels are increasing the intensity of the trade winds over the central Caribbean basin. As a result, convective cells have developed near the Pacific and Caribbean coasts. Some cloud cover from the Caribbean Sea has moved into the Northern Zone and Caribbean region, bringing rainfall and isolated thunderstorms. Rainfall accumulations over the past 6 hours have ranged between 5 mm and 28 mm.

Forecast: For the rest of the morning, rain is expected to continue in parts of the Caribbean and Northern Zone, with accumulations between 5 mm and 40 mm. There is a possibility that the cloud cover in these areas will move toward the mountains in the north and east of the Central Valley, where light to moderate rain is expected, with estimated accumulations below 20 mm.

In the afternoon, showers with thunderstorms are expected in the Nicoya Peninsula, southeastern North Pacific, Central Pacific, and South Pacific regions. Rain may continue into the early evening, with accumulations between 20 mm and 75 mm, with isolated higher amounts possible. Similar conditions may occur in the Caribbean mountains, Northern Zone, and Central Valley, especially in the western and northern parts of the region. However, accumulations in these areas are expected to range between 10 mm and 60 mm.

Warning: Moderate to high soil saturation persists in the South Pacific, Central Pacific, and Nicoya Peninsula, with values between 70% and 95%. This situation increases the risk of flooding and landslides, especially in vulnerable areas.

Given the above, the IMN recommends:

• Exercise caution due to saturated drainage systems in areas prone to this type of flooding.
• Take precautions during thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if thunderstorms occur or if strong wind gusts are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible falling of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
