Tropical Wave 14 to Pass Over Costa Rica This Friday

Discussion: A change in the weather pattern toward more humid and unstable atmospheric conditions over Costa Rica and surrounding areas will increase the occurrence of rainfall in various parts of the country. Tropical Wave 14 is specifically located over Panama. This system is expected to reach the country this Friday, and its effects will be felt that day.

Forecast: Cloudiness is expected to enter the country from the Caribbean Sea early this morning, favoring rains of varying intensity in the Caribbean and northern regions. To a lesser extent, the cloud cover will gradually spread to other parts of the country, such as the Central Valley and the mountainous areas, which may cause scattered rain. In the afternoon, cloudy development and thunderstorms are expected in the Central Pacific, South Pacific, and the Northern Pacific. Scattered rains cannot be ruled out in the Central Valley, Nicoya Peninsula, and the Caribbean mountains. Towards evening, scattered rains are expected in coastal areas on both sides of the Atlantic and also in the Northern Pacific. Accumulated rainfall between 30 mm and 70 mm is expected over 12- to 24-hour periods, with higher amounts possible in localized areas.

Warning: Soil saturation remains high, between 90% and 95%, in the Upala and Sarapiquí basins. Saturation levels range between 80% and 85% in the Northern Caribbean, South Pacific, and the Nicoya Peninsula. This increases the vulnerability to incidents in prone areas.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Be cautious about possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.
• Thunderstorm prevention: If strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
