Tropical Wave #6 over Costa Rica

Forecast: The passage of Tropical Wave No. 6 over Costa Rica, along with the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, presents a highly unstable environment for the country. Heavy rains have fallen in the afternoon in parts of Guanacaste (100 mm in Bagaces and Santa Rosa, 50 mm in La Cruz and Hojancha), and in southern parts of Puntarenas province (70 mm in Laurel-Paso Canoas, 50 mm in Puerto Jiménez). Additionally, 50 mm have fallen in Rio Nuevo de Pérez Zeledón, 60 mm in Tarrazú, and 50 mm in Fraijanes de Alajuela.

Forecast: Heavy downpours are expected in the late afternoon on the Osa Peninsula, becoming more scattered near the Central Pacific coast and mountains in the western Caribbean and around Sarapiquí. Estimated rainfall amounts range from 25 to 50 mm, with maximums of 85 mm over a 6-hour period. During the night, moderate to light rains will continue in the North Pacific, in parts of the Northern Zone, with estimated accumulations between 15 mm and 30 mm near the mountains. Low clouds and fog banks are expected in the early hours around the GAM and mountain passes.

Warning: Special attention due to the presence of variable rainfall in areas that have been recurring in recent days.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to possible sewer saturation in areas prone to flooding due to water accumulation.

• Thunderstorm prevention: If strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, it is recommended to seek shelter in a safe place, as tree branches, power lines, or other objects could fall. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
