Weather Warning (Update)
Rainy activity this afternoon
June 19, 2024
6:20 p.m.
Diagnosis: Costa Rica continues to experience significant moisture input from the Pacific Ocean during the early hours of the day, which, combined with daytime warming and unstable conditions prevailing in the upper atmosphere in southern Central America, continue to favor a rainy environment in the country.
This afternoon there have been heavy downpours in sectors of the Northern Zone (Los Chiles, San Carlos, San Clara, with maximum accumulations between 60 - 70 mm), in the east-south of the Central Valley (Goicoechea, Guarco, Santa Ana, Coronado, with accumulations between 20 - 40 mm and maximums of 65 mm), in the Central Pacific (Tarrazú, León Cortés and Quepos between 15 - 50 mm)
Forecast: For the late afternoon and early evening we expect rainy activity to be located in the north of the country, mainly in the Northern Zone and North Pacific with amounts between 50 to 80 mm. For the Central Pacific and South Pacific, the possibility of rain and thunderstorms with amounts between 20 mm and 50 mm in 12-hour periods remains. For the Central Valley and mountains of the Caribbean, intermittent rain events are expected throughout the evening period, with amounts between 10 mm and 40 mm in 12-hour periods. There is a possibility of fog at night
Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may once again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are monitored in mountains of the South Pacific, General Valley, the mountains of the North Caribbean and the North Zone, as well as both peninsulas and near the gulfs, which are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
