Weather Warning (Update)

Heavy downpours with a storm this afternoon and night

June 21, 2024
4:50 p.m.

Diagnosis: The predominance of high humidity and instability, as well as local factors, warm morning temperatures and the entry of sea breezes; add up on this Friday to the passage of tropical wave #11. All of the above has favored the presence of localized heavy showers, with the presence of thunderstorms. The maximum accumulated amounts so far are in: the mountains of Buenos Aires in Puntarenas (85 mm), Ciudad Neily and Coto Brus in the South Pacific, along with Coronado and La Unión in the Central Valley (45 mm), as well as around Ciudad Quesada in San Carlos 30 mm.

Forecast: For the rest of the afternoon and early evening, localized showers with thunderstorms will continue in the mountains of the South Pacific, in the Central Pacific, in the center and west of the Northern Zone, in addition to the development of new storm clouds to the southeast and east of the Gulf of Nicoya and reaching lower parts of the west. The estimated amounts would be between 20 - 50 mm with maximum amounts of up to 90 mm In the Central Valley, moderate to weak intensity rains are expected, with estimated accumulations between 5 - 35 mm. In the Caribbean mountains, isolated rains and showers are expected, with amounts between 20 mm and 60 mm.

Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may once again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are monitored in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the mountains of the North Caribbean and the North Zone, as well as both peninsulas and near the gulfs, which are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.

• Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong gusts of wind occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
