Weather Warning -Update-

Variable Intensity Rainfall Expected This Night

June 25th, 2025
5.10 pm

Diagnosis:
Following the passage of strong Tropical Wave #8 on Tuesday, this Wednesday is expected to bring a return to more typical rainy season conditions. Today's rainfall is mainly influenced by local factors (such as high temperatures and sea breezes) and by the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone.

The stations with the highest rainfall accumulations this Thursday are:

  • Poás Volcano – Alajuela: 109.40 mm

  • La Unión – Cartago: 74.00 mm

  • Balsa, San Ramón – Alajuela (Northern Zone): 52.60 mm

  • Las Delicias – Northern Zone: 44.40 mm

Forecast:
During the early nighttime hours, variable intensity rainfall is expected in several regions of the country.

  • Pacific: Showers with thunderstorms expected.

  • Central Valley and mountainous Caribbean: Intermittent rainfall continuing into late night hours.

  • Northern Zone: Variable rain and intense localized downpours expected.

Rainfall totals are estimated between 10 and 30 mm, with isolated maximums possibly reaching 40 to 70 mm.

Tropical Wave #9:
It is currently located over central/western Panama and continues moving toward Costa Rica. It is expected to enter the country around midnight Wednesday into early Thursday. However, its most significant effects will be felt on Thursday afternoon, when the instability associated with this wave will reinforce rainfall activity, especially in the Pacific and Northern Zone.

⚠️Warning:
Soils remain highly saturated (95–100%) in the Northern Zone and in mountainous areas of the Northern Caribbean (places such as Sarapiquí, San Carlos, and Los Chiles), increasing the risk of landslides and flooding.
High saturation levels (85–90%) are also reported in the western Nicoya Peninsula, southern Pacific mountains, and areas near the Golfo Dulce.

Based on the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution regarding possible drainage system saturation in flood-prone areas due to water accumulation.
• Thunderstorm safety: In the event of or upon perceiving strong wind gusts near storm clouds, seek shelter in a safe place, as falling tree branches, power lines, or other objects may occur. These gusts can reach up to 80 km/h in isolated cases.
