Meteorological Warning

Variable rain activity for this afternoon and evening in the country

July 26, 2024
10:40 am

Diagnosis: Unstable atmospheric conditions will occur again this Friday over the country. This is due to the proximity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, the high humidity content and local factors.

Forecast: High probability of showers with thunderstorms is expected for most of the Pacific slope, however, the most intense activity is expected for the south of the Nicoya Peninsula, as well as in the Central and South Pacific, during the afternoon and part of the night. The central part of Guanacaste maintains the probability of showers with more localized thunderstorms. Maximum estimated amounts (MME) between 40-100 mm with possible higher amounts at certain times. For the Central Valley, there is a probability of variable rain in practically the entire region, with the most intense showers mainly in mountainous areas and surrounding areas. The possibility of strong showers with descending gusts and strong lightning (MME 30-70 mm) is not ruled out. In the Caribbean, rain is expected in coastal and border areas of the North Caribbean in the late morning and early afternoon, while the mountainous areas – both in the North and South Caribbean – are likely to experience scattered showers with thunderstorms (MME 40-60 mm). The North Zone is expected to experience isolated rains and heavy showers located mainly in mountainous areas and surrounding areas (MME 40-70 mm).

Warning: Mountains in the North Zone and North Caribbean are prone to landslides due to high soil saturation and possible river overflows at the foot of the mountains. Likewise, on the Pacific side, attention should be paid to both peninsulas due to high levels of saturation. Special attention should also be paid to the Central Valley due to the probability of strong thunderstorms, downdrafts and flooding due to saturated sewers.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

Caution due to saturated sewers in places prone to this type of flooding. Prevention against thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
