Weather Warning

Condiciones de viento para sectores montañosos y partes bajas del centro y norte de nuestro país

28 de noviembre del 2023
9:30 a.m.

Diagnosis: The presence of a cold thrust to the north of the Caribbean Sea has maintained high values of atmospheric pressure in Central America since yesterday, which is favoring the increase in the trade wind. Gusts between 40 - 55 km/h have been recorded for our country in the Central Valley, while for the North Pacific regions the maximum gusts range between 50 - 75 km/h. The local maximums are found over the mountain ranges, with values of 95 km/h, 85 km/h and 65 km/h (Cerro Chirripó, Cerro Buena Vista and Poás Volcano). The incursions of occasional humidity have presented mainly weak local rains in Sixaola, Upala, Los Chiles, both in the South Caribbean and in the Northern Zone (amounts less than 15 mm).

Forecast: It is estimated that moderate to strong winds will continue in the north, center of the national territory and mountainous sectors. Specifically for the Central Valley, maximum gusts are expected with speeds between 40 - 65 km/h, while, in the North Pacific and mountainous sectors, maximum speeds will range between 65 - 95 km/h.

Regarding precipitation, an increase in moisture content is expected for the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, and towards Wednesday in the Caribbean and Northern regions. The above will be manifested with occasional variable rains mainly between the end of tonight and towards the afternoon of Wednesday. The amounts accumulated in 24 hours would be between 15-40 mm with specific maximums of 70 mm.

Warning: Special attention due to strong gusts of wind in the mountainous sectors and north of the North Pacific.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Prevention of wind gusts and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country and Guanacaste (national parks, volcanoes).

• Caution in air navigation due to increased turbulence, as well as in maritime navigation due to increased rough seas, especially in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya and northern Central Pacific.

• Avoid burning of all types, as they can get out of control.
