Weather Warning

Variable morning rains this Friday in the Caribbean regions

May 30, 2025
7:30 a.m.

Diagnosis: High humidity levels in southern Central America, combined with instability in the upper troposphere in the region, have favored variable rainfall in the Caribbean and parts of the Northern Zone. Accumulated rainfall over the last 12 hours for the Caribbean is between 15 and 30 mm, with localized highs between 60 and 90 mm, while the Northern Zone is recording between 5 and 25 mm.

Forecast: Scattered showers with occasional thunderstorms will occur during the morning from the coastal northern Caribbean to the Northern Zone, with 6-hour accumulations of 15 and 30 mm, with local highs of up to 70 mm. For the Southern Caribbean, increasingly scattered and decreasing variable rainfall is forecast, with 6-hour accumulations of 10 and 40 mm. The Central Valley will experience light rain in the eastern and northern mountainous areas, with accumulations below 10 mm.

By the afternoon, this instability will manifest in mountainous and coastal areas of the South Pacific and in the mountains surrounding the Central Pacific coast, where isolated heavy downpours with thunderstorms are expected in the afternoon and early evening. Maximum rainfall is estimated to be between 15 and 40 mm, with highs of up to 70 mm.

Warning: Due to the rainfall of the last few hours, saturated soils are found in the North Caribbean plains, Braulio Carrillo National Park, and the Sarapiquí basin.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Caution due to sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding

• Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
