Weather Report

Low pressure system affecting the country this Saturday

August 15, 2020
12:00 pm

Diagnosis: A low pressure system located in the Pacific Ocean maintains influence over the country. In addition, the intertropical convergence zone is located to the north of the national territory, which also contributes to generating unstable atmospheric conditions. During this morning rains and downpours have occurred in the Caribbean regions and mountainous parts of the country with amounts between 5-30 mm

Forecast: Throughout this afternoon, intermittent rainy activity is expected in the Caribbean and the mountainous parts of the Northern Zone, amounts estimated between 10-50 mm and possible specific higher amounts. The heaviest rains are expected for the southern Caribbean coastal areas.

For the same period, stormy downpours are projected for the Pacific slope, with the strongest activity for the coastal and surrounding areas. The maximum accumulated are estimated between 30-80 mm with possible higher amounts locally.

For the Central Valley, scattered rains of moderate intensity are expected for the high parts and surroundings, in addition to possible more intense downpours in the west. Maximum amounts estimated between 10-30 mm.

Warning: Special attention in all regions of the Pacific and North Zone in general, the Central and South Pacific have high levels of saturation.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  •     Caution on the main national highways due to reduced visibility.
  •     Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
  •     Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr

The next report will be broadcast at 6 in the afternoon.
