Meteorological Warning

Rainy activity this Sunday

Sunday May 10, 2020
10:00 am

Diagnosis: The high levels of atmospheric humidity together with the influence of the Intertropical Convergence Zone is generating unstable conditions over the region. Since this morning there have been heavy downpours in the Pacific maritime zone near the country, part of this activity has reached the coastal areas. Particularly in the surroundings of the Osa Peninsula there are strong downpours with electrical activity. On the other hand, convective activity is also carried out on the Caribbean side, a localized thunderstorm occurs in the surroundings of Sarapiquí.

Forecast: In the remainder of this morning, rainy activity is expected to spread in the Central and South Pacific regions, especially in the coastal sectors (Osa Peninsula, Savegre, surroundings of Quepos, Uvita) and around the border with Panama. . In addition, in the northern and eastern Caribbean regions of the Northern Zone, storm rains will continue, located mainly near mountainous parts. In the South Caribbean, less intense rainy activity is anticipated for this same period near the coast.

For this afternoon and early evening, rainy activity is projected for the Central Valley with isolated rains and storms mainly in the western and northern sectors and in the vicinity of the highlands. Intense rainy activity is also anticipated for the Central and South Pacific in addition to the Nicoya Peninsula during this period. Rains are expected in the rest of the country near the mountains.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  •     Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceiving strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as precaution for possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
