Informative Meteorological Warning

Disturbance in the Caribbean Sea and its potential in a tropical cyclone

October 01, 2020
10.20 a.m.

Discussion: A wide disturbance in the Caribbean Sea, near the northeast coast of Nicaragua, is producing a large area of disorganized rains and storms; it is located approximately 665 km from the city of Limón. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) indicates that conditions are conducive to the development of a tropical depression along the northwestern Caribbean Sea or the south-central Gulf of Mexico, possibly before the system reaches the east coast of Yucatán, with a development potential of 40% in the next 48 hours and 70% in 5 days.

Forecast: According to the latest analysis, due to its possible position and strengthening, there is a high probability of indirect influence towards the national territory, favoring a rainy scenario starting this Friday and towards the weekend, especially in the Pacific.

The IMN will keep a strict follow-up of the evolution of said disturbance and will inform in a timely manner of any variation of the same and its possible influence on the country.

Therefore, the IMN recommends:

  • Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
