Weather Warning

Cold surge #4 effects will continue

December 1, 2020
4.45 p.m.

Discussion: The influence of the cold surge # 4 has generated constant rains in the Caribbean and the North Zone with accumulated between 10-30 mm in the last 6 hours; There are also moderate gusts of wind in the Central Valley and the North Pacific with speeds between 30-60 km/h. While in the Central and South Pacific, isolated downpours with electrical storms typical of the rainy season are experienced with amounts between 25-50 mm in the last 6 hours.

Forecast: In the rest of the afternoon, cloud cover and weak rains will continue in the Caribbean and the North Zone, amounts between 10-20 mm; As the night period enters, an increase in rainfall is estimated in these regions with accumulated between 30-60 mm, possibly higher amounts locally. As a result of the dragging of the wind, the cloudiness will occasionally enter the Central Valley and north of Guanacaste, generating weak rains and drizzles, especially in mountainous sectors, with accumulated less than 20 mm. In the Central and South Pacific regions isolated rains and downpours are expected until the early hours of the night, amounts between 20-50 mm.

Wind gusts with values between 20-60 km/h are anticipated in the lower parts of the Central Valley and the North Pacific, in the mountain ranges of the country maximums between 40-80 km/h are expected

The influence of cold surge # 4 is expected to persist through at least Thursday.

Warning: Special attention in the North Zone and the Caribbean since a high percentage of soil saturation remains.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to flooding of rivers and streams, as well as in areas prone to landslides.
  • Prevention of strong gusts of wind and their possible impact on roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
