Weather Warning (Update)

Unstable conditions prevail in the country this Wednesday

June 5, 2024
4:40 p.m.

Diagnosis: The position and activation of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, together with the contribution of humidity driven by Tropical Wave #6, which is located in western Panama, have favored heavy showers in the Caribbean and east of the Central Valley, with variable rainfall on the Pacific side. The maximum accumulated amounts so far are in: Coto Brus with 60 mm, La Suiza de Turrialba and Cartago center with 50 mm, Laurel with 45 mm, Santa Ana with 50 mm, high parts of the Northern Zone with 30 mm, Nicoya-Nandayure with 35 mm and Barrio Aranjuez in San José with 25 mm.

Forecast: For the rest of the afternoon, showers with storms will continue, these in sectors of the center and towards the east of the Caribbean and parts of the Northern Zone. The estimated amounts will be between 20 - 60 mm with punctual maximums of 80 mm. These precipitations will decrease during the first two hours of the night. During the night period we expect moderate rains, with some localized showers, to occur on the Pacific coast and the Central Valley. Amounts between 10 to 40 with punctual maximums of 80 mm. Tropical wave #6 and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone will be reinforcing the precipitations in the country during the afternoon of Thursday, with the possibility of localized showers on the coasts of the South Pacific and North Pacific, from the early hours of Thursday.

Warning: High levels of soil saturation persist in the plains, mountainous areas and their surroundings in the Caribbean and Northern Zone (Turrialba, Cartago, Sarapiquí, Pococí, mountains adjacent to Guatuso and Upala, among others), South Pacific in general; therefore, these are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible floods. Likewise, in the east and north of the Central Valley, Nicoya Peninsula and Tempisque sector.
We recommend that the population stay informed through upcoming communications and analysis.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
• Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
• Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
• Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
