Weather Warning

Heavy rainy and electric activity this afternoon and evening

August 05, 2020
02.30 p.m.

Discussion: Several factors favor strong rainy and electrical activity in the country this afternoon, which are the proximity of the very active and positioned Intertropical Convergence Zone close to the national territory, the warm temperatures registered this morning and the entry of humidity from the maritime sectors. Accumulated between 15-40 mm are recorded in the last two hours, in the Central Valley, South Pacific and North regions.

Forecast: During the afternoon, heavy rains and heavy showers with thunderstorms will continue to appear in the Pacific, Central Valley and North Zone regions, accumulated estimates are estimated between 30-60 mm, possibly higher amounts in a timely manner. In the Caribbean isolated rains are expected in the mountainous and surrounding sectors with accumulated between 10-40 mm.

During the night moderate to heavy rains are expected, mainly in Pacific coastal areas, amounts between 25-50 mm. In the rest of the country intermittent rains are possible in the first part of the night period, accumulated 10-30 mm.

Warning: Special attention in the regions of the Central Pacific, Nicoya Peninsula and Central Valley where episodes of more intense rains are expected.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Take refuge in a safe place in case of listening to an electrical storm or perceiving strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, as well as caution for possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
