Weather Warning

Aumento de vientos alisios en el país

07 de mayo de 2020
10.55 a.m.

Discussion: A slight increase in atmospheric pressure in the Caribbean Sea is generating accelerated trade winds in the country, with greater notoriety in the Central Valley and North Pacific; the maximum speeds so far are 70 km/h in the north of Guanacaste, while in the Metropolitan Area they are around 40-50 km/h. The windy pattern generates cloud incursion from the Caribbean Sea to the province of Limón causing isolated rains in coastal areas.

Forecast: Trade winds will remain moderate with occasional strong gusts in the Central Valley, North Pacific and mountainous sectors, maximum speed range between 50-80 km / h

Regarding rainfall, in the rest of the morning and in most of this Thursday, isolated rains with thunderstorms are expected in the Caribbean and North Zone, a greater accentuation of precipitation is expected towards the night period, estimated amounts between 30-60 mm.

In the Central and South Pacific regions, local factors such as warm temperatures and humidity entering from the Pacific Ocean will be the determining factors for the presence of showers and showers with thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours accumulated between 25-50 mm. On the other hand, in the Central Valley and North Pacific the possibility of rain is low, if it occurs it will be in the form of weak rain in mountainous areas, amounts less than 5 mm.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to strong wind and its possible damage to roofs, electrical wiring, signs, trees; as well as in the mountainous parts of the country (national parks, volcanoes).
  • Prevention of boats by rough sea in the North Pacific, Gulf of Nicoya, the Caribbean Sea, as well as turbulent air navigation over mountainous sectors.
  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewerage saturation.
  • Take refuge in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceiving strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as precaution for possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
