Weather Warning Update

Tropical wave # 35 continues its passage over Costa Rica this Monday

September 7, 2020
2:45 p.m.

Diagnosis: Since the morning, the contribution of humidity from the Pacific due to the Intertropical Convergence Zone which is located over Costa Rica, together with atmospheric instability caused by the passage of tropical wave # 35 and morning evaporation in the country, have generated downpours with an electrical storm this afternoon in much of the national territory. So far, amounts between 10-25mm have been recorded in the South Pacific; in the North Pacific 10-20mm, and in the Central Valley 10-40mm.

Forecast: In the remainder of the afternoon and the night period, it is expected that the rainfall in the Central Valley will remain intermittent with estimated amounts between 20-35mm and possible maximums of 40mm. On the Pacific slope, it is anticipated that rainfall will be scattered with a possible electrical storm with amounts between 35-50mm and possible very specific maximums of 60mm

In addition, in the Caribbean and North Zone regions, partial cloudiness is expected with localized rains that reach amounts of 15-30mm.

Warning: Be very cautious around the Río Cañas in the North Pacific, South Pacific and mountains of the Central Valley and the Caribbean due to possible small landslides and floods of both rivers and streams.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •     Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  •     Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
  •     Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
