Weather Warning

Rains will persist tonight in Costa Rica

October 07, 2020
05.00 p.m.

Discussion: The position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, located in the north of Central America, causes a constant entry of humidity from the Pacific Ocean to the national territory; which has generated rains of variable intensity during this afternoon in the country. At this time, the places with the highest amounts recorded are: the province of Cartago with accumulated between 40-60mm and a maximum of up to 75mm in the canton of Tres Ríos; and the North Zone with accumulated between 30-40mm in the plains; In addition, there was strong electrical activity near the mountains of the North Caribbean.
Hurricane Delta is located in the Gulf of Mexico at this time and DOES NOT HAVE any influence in Costa Rica.

Forecast: In the next few hours, the rains will be constant and of moderate intensity in the national territory. The downpours will continue in the North Zone and the North Pacific, with amounts between 20-30mm and maximums of 50mm in the next 6 hours. There is a possibility that the rains will occur again during the early morning near the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula.

In the Central Valley, mainly in the east of the GAM (including the southern cantons of San José) and the province of Cartago, the rains will be constant but varying in intensity from weak to moderate; with estimated amounts between 20-30 mm and maximums of 40mm.

In the Caribbean regions, the rains will be concentrated in the mountains, but will diminish in intensity in the next few hours. Amounts between 15-20 and maximums of 25mm are estimated.

Warning: Special attention to the North Pacific (in particular the Guanacaste area) and the North Zone, Route 32 in the North Caribbean, since due to the rains of the last days the soils remain saturated, a condition that increases the risk of incidents.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution in areas vulnerable to flooding due to sewer saturation.
  • Caution on the main national highways due to reduced visibility.
  • Take shelter in a safe place in case of hearing an electrical storm or perceive strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, as well as caution against possible falling tree branches, power lines, among others.
