Showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening

Discussion: The Intertropical Convergence Zone remains located over Costa Rica, generating significant moisture and instability. This, along with morning warming and the arrival of sea breezes, will enhance cloudiness and showers with thunderstorms.

Forecast: Rainfall of varying intensity is expected during the afternoon and early evening, as well as occasional heavy downpours with thunderstorms. Rain and thunderstorm activity will be most prevalent in the Central and South Pacific, the Nicoya Peninsula, the Tempisque Valley, and surrounding areas. Accumulations of between 40 mm and 100 mm are estimated over six-hour periods, with higher localized accumulations possible.

Meanwhile, isolated downpours and thunderstorms are expected in the Central Valley, the North Zone, and the Caribbean Mountains, with amounts between 30 and 60 mm over six-hour periods.

Warning: Rainfall in recent days has caused high levels of soil saturation, between 85% and 95%, in the South and Central Pacific; while in the Central Valley, the Sarapiquí Basin, and the Nicoya Peninsula, around 65%. This situation increases the risk of flash floods and/or landslides.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

• Be cautious about sewer saturation in areas prone to this type of flooding.
• Prepare for thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place if strong wind gusts occur or are perceived near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among other things. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
