Weather Warning (Update)

Precipitation extends to Saturday night and tropical wave #7 for this Sunday

June 08, 2024
05.35 p.m.

Discussion: Extremely unstable atmospheric conditions continue over Costa Rica and surrounding areas due to the combination of different elements, the active and nearby Intertropical Convergence Zone, systems in the upper atmosphere, the frequent passage of tropical waves and local factors. This afternoon, intense rainfall and thunderstorms have been recorded in different parts of the country with accumulations in El Guarco de Cartago of 68 mm, Guayabo de Turrialba 75 mm, San Pedro de Montes de Oca 43 mm, Heredia 41 mm, 83 mm in Guayabo de Bagaces, 94 mm in Hojancha, among others.

Forecast: Late afternoon and into the evening, light to moderate rains will continue, as well as fog banks in the Central Valley, amounts between 20-40 mm in 6-hour periods. For the North Zone, North Pacific and mountains of the North Caribbean, moderate to heavy rains and downpours with thunderstorms are expected, with accumulated amounts between 30-60 mm, with possible higher amounts at certain times. In the Central and South Pacific, as well as in high parts of the South Caribbean, occasional rains with possible thunderstorms are expected, with estimated ranges between 10 mm and 45 mm.

Tropical wave #7 and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone will be reinforcing the rainfall in the country during this Sunday, with the greatest intensity in the afternoon and early evening in the Pacific, Central Valley and North Zone regions.

Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may once again be the precursors of flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are recorded in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the North Zone and the mountains of the Northern Caribbean, which makes these regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may once again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are recorded in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the North Zone and the mountains of the Northern Caribbean, which is why these are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
