Weather Warning
Rains of varying intensity during the afternoon and night and tropical wave #7 for this Sunday
June 08, 2024
10.30 a.m.
Discussion: The extremely unstable atmospheric pattern continues over Costa Rica and surrounding areas, due to the combination of different elements, including: an active and nearby Intertropical Convergence Zone, systems in the upper atmosphere, the frequent passage of tropical waves and local factors. All of the above favors the presence of rainy activity of varying intensity during the afternoon and night in the country. Tropical wave #7 is located around 80°W (Panama) and is moving west.
Forecast: This afternoon and evening there will be again rainfall events of variable intensity and heavy downpours with thunderstorms; starting in the early hours of the evening over the mountainous axis and gradually extending towards the lower areas.
In the Central Valley, rains of variable intensity and possible thunderstorms are expected, the strongest in sectors of the North and East. Accumulations estimated between 20-50 mm in 6-hour periods. For the North Pacific, the North Zone and mountains of the Caribbean, rains and heavy downpours with thunderstorms are expected, amounts between 30 mm and 70 mm in 6-hour periods, higher accumulations are possible in a localized manner. In the Central and South Pacific, isolated showers are expected in the surroundings of the mountain ranges and border area with Panama, extending towards coastal areas. Estimated amounts between 10 mm and 45 mm.
Tropical wave #7 and its interaction with the Intertropical Convergence Zone will be reinforcing rainfall in the country this Sunday.
Warning: The rains projected for urban areas may once again be precursors to flooding and sewer saturation in already recurring areas. Saturated soils are recorded in the mountains of the South Pacific, Valle del General, the Northern Zone and the mountains of the Northern Caribbean, which is why these are regions vulnerable to landslides and possible flooding.
Due to the above, the IMN recommends:
- Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
- Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
