Weather Warning

Rainy and thunder activity on Tuesday

October 08, 2024
10.30 a.m.

Discussion: Local factors such as warm morning temperatures and the entry of sea breezes, together with the Intertropical Convergence Zone's location close to Costa Rica, are elements that enhance the formation of cloud developments, which generate heavy rains and downpours and thunderstorms.

This morning, partly cloudy skies have predominated; however, on the Pacific coasts, denser cloud cover has remained and scattered rains have occurred; particularly in the Nicoya Peninsula and Osa Peninsula with amounts less than 20 mm in the last 4 hours.

Forecast: For this afternoon and early evening, heavy rains and downpours with thunderstorms are expected, starting in the North and East of the country, including: the Northern Zone, mountains of the Caribbean and adjacent plains. The rainy and thunderstorm activity will progressively extend to the western sector of the national territory, covering regions such as the Central Valley, mountainous parts of the Pacific and eventually the Pacific coastal strip. Accumulations are estimated to be between 30 and 70 mm, with maximum amounts of between 70 and 90 mm. In addition, the presence of fog banks in the early hours of the night in GAM and mountainous areas is not ruled out.

Warning: Saturation of elevated soils continues in the North Zone, North Pacific and South, these regions are highly vulnerable to river flooding and/or landslides. In addition, in urban areas such as GAM there is a risk of incidents due to sewer saturation and sudden flooding of streams.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  • Caution due to sewer saturation in places prone to this type of flooding.
  • Prevention against electrical storms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of occurrence or perception of strong gusts of wind near storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others. These gusts can reach 80 km/h in some isolated cases.
