Weather Warning

Rainfall persists in the Northern Caribbean and Northern Zone

April 9th, 2024
8.30 a.m.

Diagnosis: The constant inflow of moisture from the Caribbean Sea and the unstable atmosphere over Costa Rica has generated rainfall in recent days in the Caribbean and Northern Zone. Yesterday, Monday, amounts between 50 mm and 75 mm were recorded in the province of Limón and part of the San Carlos plain, with maximum amounts in Guápiles, Siquirres and Limón close to 100 mm. Meanwhile, during the early morning in Guápiles and Limón, between 30 mm and 40 mm more were recorded.

Forecast: During the rest of the morning, rains will continue in the mentioned regions, with estimated amounts between 15 mm and 30 mm. In the afternoon, a decrease in the intensity of rainfall is expected, concentrating in the mountainous sectors.

On the other hand, localized downpours with thunderstorms are forecast for the Central and South Pacific this afternoon, with estimated amounts between 15 mm and 40 mm.

Due to the above, the IMN recommends:

  •  Caution overflowing streams and small rivers in places prone to this type of flooding.
  •  Prevention before thunderstorms and seek shelter in a safe place in case of strong gusts of wind near the storm clouds, due to the possible fall of tree branches, power lines, among others.
  •  Stay informed through social networks, Twitter: @IMNCR, Facebook: Instituto Meteorológico Nacional CR and the WEB Page: www.imn.ac.cr
